A custom nightguard is made by your dentist, who takes molds of your teeth and sends them to a lab. The lab makes a guard that fits your bite exactly. This type gives you the best fit and the most protection.

The biggest benefit is comfort. Since it is made just for you, it stays in place all night, letting you breathe and swallow easily. It protects your teeth from wear, cracks, and jaw pain. Custom guards can also adjust and address bite problems, such as uneven pressure. With good care, they often last for years and much longer than store-bought options.

Cost is the biggest trade-off. Custom nightguards often run from several hundred to over a thousand dollars, and insurance coverage varies. The process also calls for at least two appointments: one to take the molds and another to make sure the guard fits properly.

Boil-and-Bite Nightguards

Boil-and-bite nightguards are easy to find at most drugstores. You soften the material in hot water, then bite down to shape it to your teeth. This gives you a semi-custom fit, which is better than a stock guard but not as exact as one from the dentist. The advantage is that they are easy to get. These guards are cheap, usually under fifty dollars. You can buy one quickly without seeing a dentist. They provide fair protection for mild to moderate grinding and can be a good short-term fix.

However, the fit is not always perfect. If you do not mold it correctly, the guard can feel bulky or loose and may move around while you sleep, giving you less protection. Boil-and-bite guards also wear out fast and often need to be replaced within a few months. If you have severe grinding or jaw problems, these guards may fall short.

Stock Nightguards

Stock nightguards come pre-made and ready to use right out of the package. You just put one in your mouth, and you are ready to go. They are the cheapest option, often costing less than twenty dollars. The idea is obvious: they are inexpensive and instantly available. If you only need a guard for a few nights, such as while traveling or waiting for a custom one, a stock guard can serve as a quick fix.

But there are some clear downsides. The one-size-fits-all design can feel uncomfortable, slip out while you sleep, or make it harder to breathe and talk. Since it does not fit your teeth, it provides only limited protection against grinding. Using stock guards for a long time can even cause bite problems or jaw pain. Most dentists do not recommend using stock guards regularly.

Which One Is Right for You

At the end of the day, the best nightguard is the one that feels comfortable enough to wear. If you only clench a little, a boil-and-bite guard may be plenty. If you are waking up sore day after day, a custom nightguard is worth the investment. Stock guards are best kept as a backup, something to reach for when nothing else is available.
